France welcomes the decision by the National League for Democracy (NLD) - Mrs. Aung San Suu Kyi’s party - to ask to be registered as a political party. This positive development was made possible by the recent amendment to the law on the registration of political parties.
France hopes that the National League for Democracy will now be able to fully participate in Burma’s political life, notably in the forthcoming by-elections which we hope will comply with all democratic norms.
We renew our appeal for the swift and unconditional release of all prisoners of conscience and for an end to the clashes in all ethnic minority areas so that an inclusive dialogue can be initiated that will allow Burma to make progress on the path toward national reconciliation.
It is within this context that Human Rights Ambassador François Zimeray will visit Burma from November 21 to 25. During this visit the ambassador will go to the NLD’s headquarters where he will meet with Mrs. Aung San Suu Kyi. He will meet with members of the government. While welcoming the reforms that have already been carried out, he will encourage the Burmese authorities to implement the other measures expected of Burma by the international community. He will also meet representatives of civil society and the International Committee of the Red Cross, as well as with representatives from the International Labor Office (ILO), the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), UNICEF and the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in order to evaluate the current human rights situation with them as well as the real impact of the measures announced by the government.
